The 18th of May 2019 was a really nice day. I got to travel across Romania all the way to Bulgaria.
The countryside of Bulgaria is amazing, with stunning landscapes and lots of greenery. The roads are as straight as a spaghetti stick and surrounded by trees on both sides that picture a dreamy way.
Sofia is a really crowded place. The streets were really busy with cars, and a lot of ‘pedestrian traffic’. At some point, I had to wait in some sort of pedestrian line to take pictures in front of the government buildings (who btw are amazing in architecture).
While I am not a fan of crowded places, the culture in Sofia left an interesting mark in me. You could see old ladies owning and working on artisanal shops, and they were quite good at doing business – plus some of them knew English (I know – a shocker!).
I was not expecting that much welcoming atmosphere in Bulgaria, maybe because having read a lot about the political and economic challenges there, a not-so welcoming idea was instilled in me. Thankfully, this was reversed as I had the privilege to meet some nice people who were willing to help, be it direction wise or just information regarding the city history, buildings to visit, etc.
What I did not like about Bulgaria, is that they do not accept EUR as a currency there. It was weird for me since they have a lot of tourists from around Europe but also across the globe, and not accepting a currency such as EUR was a bit of a drawback.
At large, the place was enjoyable. I would totally recommend visiting Bulgaria. Be in Balkan, and travel around these amazing places.
